Patching and Plastering Electrical Work

There are a lot of electrician jokes circulating and a couple of them involve a carpenter, like what do you call an electrician who tries to work as a carpenter? A bad electrician. In reverse, what do you call a carpenter who tries to work as an electrician? A shocked carpenter. We at Paintworks are fond of the one that goes: Why did the electrician wear two jackets when painting a room in his house? Because the instructions said “for best results, put on two coats.”

Mind you, we maintain a very healthy respect for electricians. We don’t want to mess around with wiring and electrical currents. Our carpenters and painters love building, renovating and painting, restoring walls and ceilings and, yes, tidying up after electricians have neatly rewired something. In this home, we were charged (ha!) with patching and repairing holes after electrical outlets were moved.

The end game in a small project like this one is to make the wall look like it had never been disturbed. With little pieces of drywall, some tape, plaster and paint, plus expert workmanship and experience, the task was accomplished. Not only does the wall look great, but also we mounted the TV set, so these folks don’t need an extra piece of furniture to hold it.

NYC Flaking Paint Repair

There’s a certain measure of comfort living in the same space for a long time. It provides continuity through the years with sentimental surroundings. Then along comes a time when a few changes are needed to preserve the overall interior feel. Peeling paint flaking on the walls gets one’s attention, and this long-term resident was ready for repairs, updates and modifications.

We scraped, sanded and added new plaster plus replaced a baseboard. Once everything on the walls was smooth and dry, we expertly painted one combo bedroom and work space a neutral sand shade with an earthy flair. Another room now sports a comfortable contrast with black walls providing a splash of sophistication and mystery, and white walls offering a sense of reverence. One bright blue accent wall delivers a pop of color with a slice of harmony. This home nest in the Big Apple now boasts smooth walls with fresh paint in comfortable contrasts for an emotional lift, like a new start.

Midtown Manhattan Plaster Repair Contractor

It is well-known that water and oil don’t mix, and equally as recognized that water and drywall are not good companions. The former really messes up the latter, causing peeling, blistering, discoloration and potential material deterioration. This client’s living room plaster had been damaged by water from above. We have a real experienced been-there-done-that crew when it comes to water damage in or not in an historic building. This was inside a gracefully renovated historic structure, and we set to work scraping and evaluating the tasks at hand.

Once all the peeling paint was removed, we plastered it, let it dry, smoothed it, plastered again as needed, dried and smoothed and primed and painted. It’s a multi-step process not to be rushed. In the end, we loved the color itself as much as the name of the color: Fire Dance by Benjamin Moore, an extraordinarily bold color which enriches this space immensely. The client now returns home to a beautiful living room in which to relax, entertain and enjoy.

You never know what floats someone’s boat, and this wild, geometric, wallpaper scheme was no longer welcome in this hall or bathroom. Work in the building had been in a long pause for covid, and our client was past ready for a fresh start on all fronts. We were only too happy ourselves to rid the spaces of wallpaper that makes your eyes waver. Then there’s always cleaning off glue and paper residue and smoothing the walls for something chic and uptown with Farrow & Ball fine paint products.

The hall is now Pavilion Gray, a classic middle shade reminiscent of an elegant 18th century Swedish neutral color. The bathroom walls and ceiling deliver a real wow factor for the deep, dark, midnight blue of Hague Blue. According to Farrow-ball.com, it is named for colored woodwork popular with the Dutch people. Both paint colors evoke strength and power with undertones of stability and balance, so they are excellent choices for the luxury lifestyle at 70 Washington Street in DUMBO.

That we eat with our eyes is a well-known cliché which highlights the value of presentation, whether it’s on the plate or in the case at the grocery store. We examine the marbling in ribeye steaks, meat stripes in bacon and fresh color and appearance of hamburger, chicken and pork chops. We may not look beyond this to the shelves and display cases which hold the meats, but surely we would notice peeling paint or rusty metal. And likely, we might then look somewhere else for carnivore vittles.

This meat market in Brooklyn is experienced not only in all things meat-related, but also in the value of sharp, clean, neat showcases for their products. We began the project by removing all the shelving and stripping off the old yellow-greenish failing paint. For superior bonding, most surfaces require a primer product which adheres to the material and prepares an excellent base on which to apply the final paint coat. Some of the work was done in a temporary pop-up paint tent we often use on a job site to contain dust and spray paint particles. Our white primer of choice did its job well, and we finished the shelf units with a glossy ebony black - the ideal, even elegant, background for meat display.
