For this family in the Prospect Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, we custom cut and installed classy new wall paneling on one side. That was painted with Benjamin Moore’s Silent Night, a medium gray with a touch of dignity. The doors, frames and walls were then covered with Benjamin Moore’s Pelican Gray, the next shade lighter. We used eggshell and satin finish paints for easy cleaning, and the whole family finds going out and coming home much more attractive and enjoyable.

Here we had a couple moving into a new place which had been erratically painted with some matte paint on the walls here and some semi-gloss paint over there. The look could be called sporadic splotchy or mis-matched mystery or peculiar paint pairing. Let’s just say that it didn’t work well in this otherwise sleek, modern, stylish, city abode.

We painted the entire 2-bedroom condo, and the living room is now a very smooth Stonington Gray from Benjamin Moore. This elegant neutral with subtle blue undertones in the right light creates a classy environment complemented with black furnishings and a natural wood credenza. The rug adds earth tones that connect everything into a cohesive space in which to relax, work, play and enjoy the latest episode of a favorite TV series. The new residents are now comfy and cozy and very content.

Sometimes a room needs a refresher, even an alluring one with a bay window and corner cabinet. This space had trim on the wall about a foot below the ceiling with wallpaper from the floor to that point more than half a century old. This was an exceptionally dated space loaded with charm and potential. Stripping wallpaper is much more complicated than it looks, especially older products which have become brittle and have decades-old glue underneath.

Even when the wallpaper was all removed, we were facing uneven, damaged drywall. A great option is to skim coat the walls to give them an evenly smooth texture, and that’s exactly what we did. The room’s character and charm were restored and the walls totally smoothed and freshened. Time for tea anyone?

Mustard, which has been around for thousands of years, is one of the all-time great condiments for hotdogs and ham sandwiches. But living among mustard-colored walls did not suit this Millburn homeowner’s idea of desirable room paint. While colors move in and out of favor and trend, the neutral palette never goes out of style. And the achromatic color of gray, in the space between white and black, carries many connotations and a lot of power.

Protecting the floor was job one, and covering the dull venetian gold with this feathery shade of gray made the job fun and exciting.
