Plastering and Painting To Revive A Home In Manhattan

When this client called us her apartment was in bad shape. After not painting or repairing the plaster in her home for over 40 years everything started to fail. Paint was falling from everywhere. Adding to the situation was water damage from the apartment above. We spent multiple days scraping and carefully disposing off all the failing paint and plaster. We were surprised to discover wallpaper underneath the paint (seen in the 2nd picture below). The client didn’t know there was wallpaper there! We then spent multiple days priming and plastering the entire apartment to return it to it’s former glory. You can see the dramatic transformation, especially in the bathroom picture below. These pictures were taken at the 70% mark of the project. While we always recommend addressing paint issues as they arise, it is never too late to save your home.

Paint Color Trends For 2019

New Year's Resolution: New Paint, New Home, New Me

From the color of your car, your linens and your favorite sweater to the color of neon lights, dishes, socks, paint and product packaging, there's a concerted effort to attract your attention with color. Without reading the company name, most folks can accurately identify, just from the color, a UPS or FedEx truck, can of Coca-Cola or Tiffany's box. The latter has its own trademarked robin's egg shade of blue.

Color is a powerful branding mechanism, as well as a delight to the eye in the natural world, our homes and work spaces. Colors promote emotional characteristics and perceived space. If you look around the Internet long enough, you can find almost every color is trending somewhere. The challenges are (1) to choose colors which enhance your home, personality and lifestyle, and (2) engage the best professional painters to transform a room or entire home into your own special retreat. The second decision is the easy one: Paintworks & Decorating.

Paint companies and fashion designers often drive color trends. Benjamin Moore has selected as its Color of the Year for 2019 a chic pewter gray named Metropolitan AF-690. Ellen O'Neill, director of strategic design intelligence, describes it as "comforting, composed and effortlessly sophisticated ... exuding beauty and balance. It's a color in the neutral spectrum that references a contemplative state of mind and design." The advantage of a gray tone is the opportunity to add vibrant colors in furniture, accents, art and fabric.

A warm dark colonial blue dubbed Blueprint S470-5 is Behr's 2019 Color of the Year, and they call it an "honest, approachable color that conjures up the blueprints builders rely on to bring architectural designs to life." Blue in any shade can evoke the peace and serenity found in landscapes and water views.

PPG Paints claims for 2019 that "classic luxury meets the restorative power of nature in this trending deep green paint color" named Night Watch. “The restorative power of nature is important in society now more than ever,” explains Dee Schlotter, PPG senior color marketing manager. "Night Watch is about bringing the healing power from the outdoors into your home." Memories of a walk in the park, like Central Park or Pelham Bay Park, can occupy a permanent space in your home.

A creamy terra cotta color from the American Southwest has migrated into the Big Apple and takes center stage as Sherwin-Williams' 2019 Color of the Year: Canyon Clay. It can go in a contemporary, neutral, natural or splashy direction in a high-rise loft, Upper East Side condo or Brooklyn brownstone.

Others in the color industry like Valspar and Pantone release palettes of colors they see as both trending and complementary. These run the gamut of the off-white creams and ubiquitous and optimistic yellows to natural greens and browns, soothing teal and blues, dramatic purples and energizing reds and oranges.

Color is a matter of personal preference, and the good news is that you don't need to be limited. Accent walls and contrasting trim are wildly popular, and while sky blue color was once relegated to porch ceilings, colors have found their way inside to add an element of interest and/or expand the space. Painting a wall to within two feet of a light colored ceiling and adding a thin strip of wood trim, for example, can make a small room seem larger. Light colors in general expand a space, while dark colors increase coziness. Another tip is to choose a paint color one or two shades lighter than you fall in love with on the paint chip.

After surfing the web at Houzz, Pinterest, hgtv.com and other sites, make your color selections and connect with Paintworks for the most professional application using the best practices and tools in the industry. We live up to our slogan: "Painting is our passion - Making people happy is our mission.”

Choosing Paint Colors To Sell or Rent A Property in New York

Staging a home or warming cinnamon on the stove are good measures to selling your home, but painting the large expanses of walls delivers a long-term appeal to prospective buyers as well as renters. Preparing to sell and for tenant turnover are perfect times to paint.

Neutral is the keyword, and Paintworks & Decorating can guide your selections and professionally transform your interior or exterior spaces. The fresh, crisp, newness of white and warmth of cream in myriad choices permits prospective buyers to visualize art and furnishings, as well as potential accent walls. Halstead, a premier regional real estate and property management company, contracts with Paintworks frequently with a preference for "Decorator's White" for interiors.

Variations of gray are ideal for the sleek, modern, industrial feel. Misty pewter and pale silver lend an elegant emotion to any space. Moving into taupe, the gray tones integrate gentle, earthy browns. Light latte and dusty ranch browns emit an agreeable hue wherein home buyers and renters in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx can comfortably bring their favorite colors and furnishings into the mind's eye. Home buyers and prospective tenants touring neutral color rooms have a visual advantage to let their imagination run wild.

The Bold Blue Den - Manhattan Apartment Painting

Stepping out, being bold and taking a risk can be applied to homeownership as well as interior colors. Buying property is adulting at its peak, making a serious investment and becoming an integral community member. Color is one of the most powerful tools in the homeowner's toolbox without a cord or battery pack. It can create mood, enlarge or shrink the perception of space and stimulate the senses.

New homeowners in Manhattan's Upper East Side recently contracted with locally-owned Paintworks & Decorating to color their new crib. One room especially evokes an eyebrow-lifting wow factor for its monochromatic blue theme. The walls, trim and doors are all smoothly coated with a brave medium dusky blue that tinges the horizon just before sunrise or sunset begins to glow. The space evokes the warmth of your favorite blue jeans coupled with a sense of adventure like riding waves at Rockaway Beach or bouldering in Central Park.

As daylight changes, lighting alters color, and what looks one way under fluorescent lighting can appear darker, lighter or more yellow or red near large windows. The experienced home painters at Paintworks & Decorating are experts with paint and coloring, having long ago traded in crayons for brushes and paint rollers.

Painting Fire Escapes in Little Italy NYC

Painting fire escapes in New York is a crucial element for standard upkeep of a building. Fire escapes may rarely get use but they must be ready and sturdy during an emergency. This is why painting them to protect the metal is so important. Fire escapes are constantly beaten down by the NYC elements. We always start by grinding off any failing coatings. Once that is done we apply Rust destroyer primer that converts any remaining rust in preparation for the finish coats. We then apply 2 coats of UV resistant industrial coatings to ensure that the fire escapes are protected long term. We painted the above fire escape in Little Italy last month. The owners were happy to get it done before the cold weather hits.

After living in their condo for 2 years this client wanted to refresh the place with new colors, patched holes, to make the place feel new again.

The super of the building recently removed the non-working intercom phone leaving a gapping hole in the living room wall. We were able to completely patch and plaster the hole so you can’t even tell it was there in the first place. After caulking around the windows and plastering the other cracks the place was ready for painting. Using fresh rollers and proper technique we repainted their accent wall to show seamless color. The previous paint job showed major flashings which distracted the eye from the tv the wall was situated on. We painted the bathroom with Benjamin Moore Aura Bath & Spa to ensure longevity in the hot humid environment that is a bathroom. Always grateful to paint beautiful Upper West Side apartments.

West Village Apartment Painter

We love painting in the West Village and were excited to paint a large 2 bedroom apartment there in April. The client is an artist who wanted to add some color to her place. We painted multiple accent walls including one behind the piano to give the piano a feel that it was a part  of the wall. The shine of the piano really pops in front of the black matte. We painted the wall directly to the right of the piano to match the fireplace backsplash. It transformed the room. We painted the kitchen with Benjamin Moore Kitchen & Bath black matte to help withstand the heat and other kitchen elements. Overall it was a very fun project. The client is happy after not painting the apartment in over 8 years.

Farrow & Ball Floor Painter

This apartment inside a converted commercial building has space for such unique possibilities. This couple wanted to liven up their dinged up white wood floor. We started by cleaning the entire floor then put a primer on top. After it dried we applied the first coat of Farrow & Ball paint. After it dried we applied a second coat. You can see the difference in the middle picture. The finished product looks smooth and sleek and goes perfectly with their new kitchen cabinets and furniture. Paint has so many possibilities and capabilities. Instead of refinishing their floor they gave it a unique color and new life. We loved the opportunity to be apart of this creative remodel!

Chelsea, Manhattan Interior Painting

It was a snowy day in February when these new homeowners called us looking to paint their new place with some bold colors. They had a very tight timeframe as they had to be out of their old apartment in just 2 days. We were able to see them the same day they called us and start/finish the very next day. It was a great challenge painting their 15 foot ceilings. Their color choices were unique and colorful and matched their personalities well. It was cool to be a part of such a well designed apartment in the sleek Chelsea area.

Views of Central Park are some of the most sought after views in the city. This beautiful apartment has floor to ceiling windows facing Central Park from the north side. The views are simply stunning. Before the new homeowner moved in they wanted the apartment to feel new again. What's a great way to make an apartment feel new again? A fresh coat of paint! From top to bottom we repainted the entire apartment with Benjamin Moore Aura White. The new coat of white paint shows off how big the spaces are while taking advantage of the abundance of natural light. Clean cuts around the baseboards, columns, and chandelier were crucial. We had a great time painting this space and look forward to painting more places with spectacular views of Central Park.

Plastering and Painting In The Upper West Side

Back in May we had the opportunity to help a new homeowner refresh their apartment before moving in. The beautiful historic building in the Upper West Side was starting to show its age. Much of the ceiling plaster was cracking and failing. We carefully scraped all damaged and failing areas of the ceiling. We then primed the surfaces, re plastered and painted the entire apartment. The client chose a great wall color that goes well with the white soffits throughout the apartment.

Manhattan Dining Room and Hallway Painter

After a few weeks on the market this couple on the Upper East Side called us to help freshen up their home. With multiple young children running around, the walls in the hallway and dining room looked a little worn and dirty. After lightly cleaning the walls we painted the walls with Benjamin Moore Scuff X to help withstand the high traffic and constant touching. Scuff X is also very resistant to scuffs and is easy to wipe off any marks which made it the perfect product for this apartment while it is being viewed by prospective buyers. The dining room looks refreshed and clean with natural light pouring in.
