Baseboards generally are not noteworthy - unless they are absent. Not only do they provide an additional trim detail and aesthetic element, baseboards function to seal the seam where there is likely a tiny gap to allow for expansion and contraction of hardwood floors and settling of the entire structure. They also take the brunt of something like a boot, vacuum cleaner (robot or not), or errant ball or toy hitting the wall at the floor. Tight baseboards prevent dirt, dust, or spilled liquid from seeping out of sight, where mold can form, and drywall can become damp and deteriorate.
